Teresa Cheng (GBM,GBS,SC,JP)

Ms. Teresa Cheng is a senior counsel and international arbitrator. She is currently an Adjunct Professor at Tsinghua University, Co- Director of the International Arbitration and Dispute Resolution Programme at Tsinghua University Law School, and Co-Chairman and one of the founding members of the Asian Academy of International Law (AAIL).


Ms. Cheng was the former Deputy Judge/Recorder in the Court of First Instance of the High Court of Hong Kong SAR from 2011 to 2017. She also served as Secretary for Justice of the Hong Kong SAR from 2018 to 2022.


During her career as a lawyer and arbitrator, she has been involved in the resolution of a wide range of commercial and investment disputes in many jurisdictions around the world, and was the Chairperson of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators Hong Kong Branch (now known as the East Asia Branch), where she became the first Asian woman to be elected as the President of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators following an election by the Institute's global affiliates in 2008.


She has served as a member of the World Bank Sanctions Committee, an arbitrator of the World Bank's International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID), an arbitrator of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), a member of the Advisory Committee of the International Council for Commercial Arbitration (ICCA), a Vice-Chairman of the International Court of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), and a Chairperson of the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre.
