Fan Yu gained her Master Degree of Law from the Law School of Renmin University of China, and Ph.D. of Law from Nagoya University, Japan. She went to the Law School of University of Wisconsin-Madison, United States as Senior Visiting Scholar. Prof. Fan is currently a professor and Ph.D. supervisor at Renmin University of China Law School, adviser of the Dispute Resolution Research Center of Renmin University, expert advisory member of the Supreme People's Procuratorate, vice chairman of the China International Chamber of Commerce Mediation Center and vice president of the Beijing Association for Alternative Dispute Resolution. She used to be vice president of the Comparative Law Research Association of China Law Society, vice president of the Sociology of Law Research Association of China Sociology Society, director of the Civil Procedure Law of Research Association of China Law Society and director of the Trial Theoretical Research Association of China Law Society.

Prof. Fan's main research areas are jurisprudence, comparative law, dispute resolution, comparative judicial systems and comparative civil procedure law. She has published Research on Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Mechanism, Tutorial of ADR, Research on Class Action Lawsuits, Theory and Practice of Dispute Resolution, Construction of a Diversified Dispute Resolution Mechanism and a Harmonious Society, etc. She has also published more than 130 papers in Chinese, English and Japanese languages in domestic and foreign journals such as Social Sciences in China and China Legal Science. Prof. Fan has presided over the completion of major projects of the Ministry of Education of the P.R.C., projects of the Chinese Social Science Fund, projects of legal construction and theory research of the Ministry of Justice of the P.R.C., and projects of the Ford Foundation, the Asian Development Bank, the Macao SAR Government, and the Central Social Security Comprehensive Management Committee. She has won the 2008 Qian Duansheng First Prize for Outstanding Research Achievements in Law, the First Prize for Outstanding Achievements of Beijing Philosophy and Social Sciences, the Award for Outstanding Scientific Research Achievement in Law from the Ministry of Justice and many other academic awards. In 2009, she was selected as a Contemporary Chinese Legal Scholar.
