Zhang Yuejiao

Prof. Zhang Yuejiao is currently the Adviser of China's International Trade Promotion Commission, Vice President of China's International Economic Law Society, Director of WTO Law under China Law Society, Honorable President of International Commercial Dispute Prevention and Settlement Organization, Arbitrator of ICSID, ICC, LCIA, CEITAC, BIAC and HKCIA, and Member of Board of Directors of HIAC. She was served as the Dean of Institute for International Dispute Settlement, Tsinghua University, Director of International Arbitration Programs (IADS).


Prof. Zhang has been selected and appointed as the first Chinese of the seven judges of the Appellate Body of WTO Since 2007. Prof Zhang was elected as the Chair of the Appellate Body, where she served two terms for more than eight yeas and handled 40 appeal cases among WTO member Governments. Since 1982, she worked in several international organizations, served as legal counsel of the World Bank, Assistant General Counsel and Director General as well as Co-Chair of the Administrative Committee of the Asian Development Bank, Director of the Board of Directors of West African Development Bank, Member of the UNIDROIT Governing Council, and Director of the Board of International Development Law Institute.


In 1978, Prof. Zhang joined China National Import and Export Administration Commission and China Foreign Investment Administration Commission, and engaged in China's reform and Opening-up, especially in foreign-related economic legislation. From 1984 to 1998, Prof. Zhang held several high positions in the Department of Treaty and Law of the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation of the People's Republic of China, which included Director General of the Department. During this time, she participated in the drafting of many laws, including: the General Principles of Civil Law, Foreign Economic Contract Law, Company Law, China's Joint Venture Law, Foreign Trade Law, Anti-dumping Regulation, Anti- Subsidy Regulation. She led the Chinese delegation for the negotiations of the Bilateral Treaty for the Protection of Investment BIT with about 50 countries. She was China's negotiator for intellectual property with foreign countries. She acted as senior legal counsel for China's GATT resumption and accession to WTO. Prof. Zhang attended as observer the concluding session of the Uruguay Round Trade Negotiations in Geneva on Trips in early 1991.


Prof. Zhang specializes in International Economic laws, including Foreign Investment Law, International Trade Law, Company Law, Contract Law, Intellectual Property, Project Financing, Banking Law, WTO law, Arbitration and Dispute Settlement. Prof. Zhang has a distinguished legal career in both the private and public sectors, providing legal services to international organizations and the Government of China, thereby gaining extensive experience in law preparation, implementation, negotiation and dispute settlement.


In early 1964 she was selected to study in France upon the establishment of Sino- France diplomatic relations and graduated from Rennes University and received BA degree. Then, she studied American laws and international law at Georgetown University and received LLM degree in 1981. In 2016, she was rewarded by Georgetown University the Honorary Doctorate Law Degree for “her thirty years' contribution to law and justice”. She has been a professor of law for many years, teaching at several world leading universities such as, Renmin University of China, University of International Business and Economics, Shantou University, Columbia University, Nante University of France, University of Hong Kong.


She has passed China's Bar and received lawyer's license in 1985. She has received the Award of Asian best lawyer and Awards of the outstanding woman of international organizations. She was elected as one of ten legal news figures in 2007 in China. She was announced by WTO as one of the pioneer women of WTO in 2017. Prof. Zhang Yuejiao has received a very distinguished national award of “Pioneer of reform and opening up” by Chinas State Council in 2018. Professor Zhang is fluently in Chinese, English and French and has published many law articles and several books on international economic law.
