ZHANG Yuejiao

Ms.Zhang previously served as the Director General of the Treaty and Legal Department of the Ministry of Commerce. Since 1978, she has participated in China’s reform and opening up of foreign-related economic legislation, including the Law on Sino-Foreign Joint Ventures, the Law on Foreign Economic Contracts, and the Foreign Trade Law. She has also participated in negotiations for investment protection agreements, China’s resumption to GATT and accession to the World Trade Organization, and 13 years of Sino-US and Sino-European intellectual property negotiations. Ms. Zhang has held senior legal positions in international organizations such as the World Bank, the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law, and the Asian Development Bank. Ms. Zhang is the first Chinese national to serve as a member and chairman of the Appellate Body of the World Trade Organization’s Dispute Settlement Mechanism. Ms. Zhang has been designated by the President of the World Bank as one of the world’s ten arbitrators for resolving international investment disputes . Ms. Zhang served as the first president of the Institute for International Dispute Resolution at Tsinghua University and the former director of the International Arbitration and Dispute Resolution Program at the Law School of Tsinghua University.
Ms. Zhang has served as a professor at Shantou University and an honorary professor at the University of Economics and Business. Professor Ms. Zhang has dedicated to researching and teaching international investment law, international trade law, intellectual property law, and dispute resolution law and practice for decades.
In 2016, Georgetown University awarded Ms. Zhang an honorary Doctor of Law degree, recognizing her “thirty years of contribution to law and and justice”. In 2018, Ms. Zhang was awarded the “Reform Pioneer” medal by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the CPC Central Committee.
