On October 17, 2019, the International Mediation Summit 2019 was held in Chongqing, China. The Summit is jointly organized by the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT) and Chongqing Municipal Government. The leaders of the Supreme People's Court of China, Ministry of Justice of China, CCPIT, Ministry of Law of Singapore, Department of Justice of the HKSAR and Chongqing Municipal Government attended the opening ceremony and delivered speeches.
LUO Dongchuan, Vice President of the Supreme People's Court of China, pointed out in his speech that constructing a diversified dispute resolution mechanism that efficiently links mediation, arbitration and litigation provides necessary safeguard to the orderly development of transnational economic and trade and to the stability of global trade order. He raised three proposals: firstly, grasping the essence of the concept encouraged by the Belt and Road Initiative and promoting the development of the international commercial dispute resolution mechanism under rule of law; secondly, advancing system building through the improvement of institutions and taking full advantages of the International Commercial Court of the Supreme People's Court; thirdly, enhancing the fine implementation of the international commercial dispute resolution system through the New York Convention and the Singapore Convention on Mediation.
The theme of this Summit is "Exploring the International Diversified Dispute Resolution Mechanism in the New Era". It focuses on in-depth exchange of views on topics including the construction of international commercial dispute resolution system under the context of globalization, the significance of the signing and implementation of Singapore Convention on Mediation, lawyer mediation and commercial mediation, mediation practical skills and cooperation modes. Through discussions on the new ideas and methods of the construction of diversified international commercial dispute resolution mechanism, new trends and areas of international mediation development are mutually shared. Thirty experts from more than 10 countries and regions including Mainland China, Hong Kong Special Administration Region and Macau Special Administration Region, the United States, the United Kingdom, Singapore, Malaysia, India, Italy, Switzerland, Mexico, Spanish delivered speeches and comments in the Summit. More than 400 professionals including mediators, arbitrators, judges, legal experts, lawyers and in-house counsels from all over the world participated in the Summit.
