Professor Lei Chen currently holds the Chair in International Arbitration and Chinese Law at Durham University, United Kingdom, where he also serves as the Deputy Dean of the Durham Law School and Director of the Durham International Dispute Resolution Institute. He is a Fellow of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts, a Titular Member of the International Academy of Comparative Law (IACL), and a Fellow of the European Law Institute (ELI). He is also an Honorary Professor at the University of Galway, Ireland, an Adjunct Professor at City University of Hong Kong, a Wenlan Scholar Visiting Professor at Zhongnan University of Economics and Law, and a Visiting Chair Professor at Shandong University.


Professor Chen’s academic expertise spans the fields of civil law, private international law, investment dispute resolution, and international commercial arbitration, in which he has made outstanding scholarly contributions.


In addition to his academic achievements, Professor Chen has extensive arbitration experience. He serves as an arbitrator for several institutions, including the China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission (CIETAC), the Beijing Arbitration Commission (BAC), the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre (HKIAC), the Korean Commercial Arbitration Board (KCAB), the Asian International Arbitration Centre (AIAC) in Kuala Lumpur, and the Thailand Arbitration Center (THAC). He is also an expert mediator at the Singapore International Mediation Centre (SIMC) and an expert member of the Global Legal Innovation Platform for Online Dispute Resolution.
